Say "cheese"

You hear the best news at the hair salon. Really. It isn't just idle gossip. Yesterday, while having my hair colored, I got to overhear the salon owner talking about the new drug for teens: cheese. Not the by-product of Bessie's juice, but a combination of black tar heroin and some over-the-counter antihistamines. The salon owner specified Benadryl, but CNN specifically mentions Tylenol PM.

The problem seems to be localized in Dallas, but now that CNN is advertising it, chances are use will crop up in other parts of the country. Especially since it's so cheap. Pine Magazine calls it a "Poor Man's Heroin" for kids.

The satire has already begun on ridiculopathy.com.

"We didn't want to glamorize this," he said. "We initially wanted to keep this quiet, thinking it would go away. That didn't happen." -- Police Chief

Well leave it to the news media to report it. I think another advantage of web journalism is that, while it can glamorize and dramatize a story, the potency is much less than that of TV news. I won't lie.. after reading the article and seeing the pictures, my initial reaction was "I wonder what that high is like." That is the natural effect of reporting on drug isues, of course.

Rhetorical question: why is it that, when something good is developed, there is an army of people ready to use it for evil? I include journalsts as members of that army. How long before we hear about deaths from Benadryl or Tylenol PM?
